Hi.
I am a repairing garage and have this ML 3200 Diesel.

We have had two codes come up.

P2510 - Check component Y77/1 ( Boost pressure regulator)
P2616 - Check component B60 ( Exhaust Pressure sensor) Control variaiton.

We have changed the electric turbo boost regulator with a new part from a reliable source. We have used this source of regulators on other vehicles.
We have changed the Exhaust pressure sensor next to the turbo. The car runs fine but after about 5-6 weeks the vehcile will struggle to accelerate out of a junction, throw the engine light on and leave these two fault codes.
We have checked the pipework etc. It looks very sooty around the exhaust area. We have removed sensors from exhaust and it looks quite black and sooty, I thought these engine ran quite clean.

Can anyone give us any info on the above problem. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

It now suggests that the variable vanes in the turbo are sticking.
This might be because of a build up of carbon, however, there is a common problem with exhaust manifolds breaking up inside, sending debris throught the turbo, bending the vanes.
For the work involved, I suggest you closely scrutinise the turbine and vanes for any signs of damage.

Hi Alex

Many thanks for the reply. We have suspected the turbo maybe faulty, although it does seem to boost ok when driving. The arm from the regulator motor is nice and free. We have been authorised by the customer to strip it down. We were just trying to get any info we could prior to stripping.

We can see the impellor on the inlet side of the turbo and they look ok, but cant see the exhaust side yet.

Once again thanks

The MB protocol is to check for damage, and if any is found, to replace both manifolds.

Hi Alex.

We have removed the elbow at the rear of the turbo, between the turbo and exhaust front pipe. Cant see any damage to turbo. No iron filings or anything present. Removed exhaust front pipe and all looks ok, quite sooty but no debris.

Cant really see any evidence to result in manifold/turbo replacement.

Any other info you can give me would be gratefully appreciated.

OK, you absolutely must check the vanes, or at least the turbine blades right at the back, around which the vanes are placed. Any nics or bending at the back of the turbine blades is bad news.
We certainly would not expect evidence to be apparent when the 'elbow' is disconnected, and I would not expect to see swarf!!
You will need a bore scope to do this with turbo insitu, or a mirror at the very least.

Hi Alex.

We have looked with a mirror and can see the turbine blades very clearly. The blades and the housing are all ok. No signs of 'bent' blades or damage to housing.
I am beginning to question wether the electric motorised actuatpr, that we have changed a few months agao, is playing up.

OK, but you do understand that it is right at the back, against the backplate?
And how do the vanes look?
Any odd rattling noises, sound like coming from exhaust?

It might be the actuator, supposedly new ones to fit are still not available, and the notion of 'reconditioning' one is a bit of a non starter too.

Hi Alex. Many thnaks for the replies so far.

All the vanes do look good. Looked witha bore scope too, although the mirror is very clear. No noises. Rotated turbo shaft from the front and all feels good. Cant really fault it, and we have had a real good look.

It might be that we have to change the complete turbo with the actuator. We have put a recdonditioned actuator on it so I have a bit of a question mark against it in case the motor is not exactly made to original specification.

All your help is very much appreciated.

As I understand it (and I have looked into it before), there are no new spares available for inside the actuators.
